FAQs

1. Do I Need To Make Homemade Whipped Cream Or Can I Use Cool Whip Instead? * I use Cool Whip all the time but for this particular recipe, I find that the homemade whipped cream makes a really big difference in the flavor. If you are a big Cool Whip fan or just short on time, feel free to substitute Cool Whip for the whipped cream. 2. Can Banana Pudding Be Made In Advance? * Yes! In fact, you want to make it one day in advance to allow the flavors to really meld and the banana flavor to intensify. Two days in advance is fine but one is preferable. We still enjoy it up to three days later but by then the bananas are starting to brown a bit. 3. Can This Be Frozen? * Nope, it really can’t. You’ll end up with a mess that no one will want to eat. 4. How Ripe Should My Bananas Be? * Bananas for banana pudding need to be just barely ripe, no brown spots. * if the bananas are too ripe, they will get mushy while the pudding is setting up * very ripe bananas brown faster than just barely ripe bananas which means your banana pudding will start looking brownish in a few days

Though these are not rated for the 400 degreetemp in the recipe, since the cooking time is so short, I have not had anyissues in baking the pudding in them. The wonderful thing about these bowls isthat I have the lids that go on them. This way, we can eat them over severalnights without the bananas going bad. I also have used 1/2 t of bananaflavoring in place of the liquor.absolutely delicious. I couldn’t find the vannilla wafers in our grocery storehere in switzerland so i used the biscuits for Tiramisu and that was verynice. Soaked up the custard and very soft.Made this using pieces of home made rum cake I had in my freezer a month aftereaster instead of the vanilla wafers. Everyone loved it. I actually don’t carefor the traditional banana pudding made with purchased wafers so I wouldn’tmake it that way. But was looking for a way to use up that rum cake and whenlooking for a way to use leftover cake of any kind where there’s not enough togo around this will be my go-to.I used and extra egg, sweet condensed milk and Half and Half. It is Delish!I used almond flour instead of regular flour since I had a bag of it at home.I had to add some cornstarch to thicken the pudding, likely due to thesubstitution. I will double the recipe next time. This made a very smallamount in a little dish. I added banana extract instead of banana liqueur.I added more wafers and substituted the banana liqueur with banana extract.OMG, Chef John rocks with this easy recipe. The only problem was not eatingthe vanilla wafer while waiting for the bananas to ripen. This recipe is spot on for how I remember eating banana pudding as a child. Welove to eat it warm in our house.1st, love this recipe! It’s great! My mistake was using a baking dish that wastoo large for the banana slices and not having Nilla Vanilla Wafers. BUT, bothof those issues turned out to be serendipitous. I used blueberries where I ranout of banana, so, about 1/3 of the dish, and I used small Madeleine’s insteadof the wafers. Both rocked! In fact, my son and I actually loved the blueberryportion as much as the banana. It’s a new recipe, “Southern-Style BakedBlueberry Pudding!” In any case, this recipe is really, really good.I double batched it for my larger family.
